General Guidelines for Diets During the Healing Process

Warm or room temperature only, anything too hot or too cold can cause harm

Avoid spicy foods

Avoid foods with caffeine, it is a diuretic and will require you to drink more to stay hydrated. One caffeinated drink per day is OK.

Avoid any chips, nachos, or similar types of foods.

Avoid any foods that require opening your mouth wide such as hamburgers, large sandwiches, etc.

Avoid foods that require a lot of chewing to eat such as bagels, steak, etc.

Avoid foods that require biting with your front teeth such as apples, corn on the cob, bagels, etc.

Try to eat a balanced diet with carbohydrates, protein, and fat.

Eat smaller meals more often throughout the day.

Do not try to “take advantage” and lose weight. Your body needs a proper diet to heal. No matter how much you think you are eating you will most likely lose weight anyway.

The thicker the consistency, the more difficult it will be to drink.

Dairy products may lead to more or thicker mucus in your throat, avoid these products if you are having an issue with mucus.
